Windows 2000 /2003 Server standard dual quad core cpu?
It's my understand that windows 2000 server standard will support up to 4 CPUs. I just installed a new server with dual quad cores giving me 8. However only 4 cores are showing up. I thought licensing was based on CPU and not on cores. Multiple processor support has been turned on but seems like it's confused between cores and cpus. Is there a way to get arround this other tnah buying entersize edition?

You’re correct – licensing is based on physical socket CPUs, not on the number of cores… BUT, Windows 2000 is OLD. Multicore and hyperthreaded CPUs did not exist when it was released to Manufacturing 8 years ago. As a result, 2000 can only view each core as a physical processor. (There was never any update to it to allow multi-core/HT awareness).
Server 2003 on the other hand is both multi-core and hyperthreading aware – so it should see all cores/HT processors. A quad core, HT enabled CPU in a 2003 system should appear to have 8 processors.
